Being the inquisitive type, I Googled that phrase and found it was originally Bread and Circuses. A long dead Roman poet named Juvenal (c 200) originated it. In his work Satire X the Latin phrase panis et circenses (bread and circuses) is given as the only remaining cares of a Roman populace which has given up its birthright of political involvement. Here Juvenal displays his contempt for the declining heroism of his contemporary Romans. Here is the translated passage:
“… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses”
(Juvenal, Satire 10.77–81)
Now you may ask, “What the heck does this have to do with the Courier’s lack of press coverage?” To me, it may be symptomatic of a general trend in our society, one of seeking amusements over the more burdensome business of keeping tabs on our elected officials.
Thanks to our society’s insatiable appetite for sports (circuses), modern politicians need only concern themselves with handouts (bread) to gain popular support, instead of gaining it through sound policy. In this they are abetted by the Courier, our schools and us ourselves.
I’m not suggesting an end to high school sports, or sports in general. What I am suggesting is a de-emphasis on them by our news media. They should be paying more attention to local, state and national issues rather than devoting their efforts to reporting on circuses. It is up to We the People to let the media know we are not happy with their version of Bread and Circuses.
