My 2nd issue after a tax hungry government

I am an avowed supporter of our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Unfortunately, many well meaning so-called "progressives/liberals", mostly from large urban areas, think that by making firearm ownership difficult to impossible, crime will disappear. Nothing could be further from the truth.

As the discussions over Obamacare have broadened, I am amazed that few, if any, of the talking heads (those on FOX News included) have asked the question "Where will the USA get the Primary Care Physicians (PCP) to handle 47 million more patients, or even half that number?" More and more Internists, General Practitioners and Family Practitioners are leaving medicine. Fewer and fewer medical students are opting for these fields, preferring to specialize.
(For some eye opening articles Google "General Practitioner Shortage".)

Retirees on SS to get pay cut in 2010 and 2011

The trustees who oversee Social Security are projecting there won't be a cost of living adjustment (COLA) for the next two years. That hasn't happened since automatic increases were adopted in 1975. By law, Social Security benefits cannot go down. Nevertheless, monthly payments would drop for millions of people in the Medicare prescription drug program because the premiums, which often are deducted from Social Security payments, are scheduled to go up slightly.

Will the members of congre… Continue

US Rep Ann Kirkpatrick Health Care Reform Tele-Town Hall... what a JOKE!

Why is Ann Kirkpatrick afraid to face the electorate of Yavapai County? Her farcial tele-town hall was impossible to access. I, and probably many of you, wanted to listen to her responses to questions from both sides of the Obamacare issue. We were denied that opportunity thanks to her desire to avoid us, her employers.

During the first hour of the tele-town hall I was met with a recorded message stating I could not be connected due to overwhelming demand. I do not know how many "ports" were av… Continue

Prescott's Polite Protest

A mob of approximately one hundred of us polite people gathered outside Rep. Kirkpatrick's Prescott office on Saturday, August 8 to voice our anti-Obamacare views. Passing motorists by a factor of ten to one overwhelmingly supported our ruly mob’s views. The only blight on the morning’s activities was the shouted comment by one Democrat Doyen that “You all should be shot” as she drove her gas-guzzler past our group. Local media once again chose to boycott our gathering, or else wer… Continue

New descriptive needed

The terms used to describe people jumping our borders to enter our country have become meaningless. Since the vast majority of us are descended from immigrants the time has come to use a different term to describe them other than illegal or undocumented immigrants.

Let's start with the fact that they are citizens of foreign nations. Thus they could be called foreign citizens or foreign nationals.

Next, these people have broken our Nation'… Continue

I read Saturday’s Prescott Courier with ever growing disappointment in the paucity of their 17-word coverage of Friday evening’s Memorial For America on the courthouse square. This was further heightened when I reached the second section. Ninety percent of page 1B and close to half of page 4B were devoted to a football game played by high school children. For some reason this conjured up a phrase from my memory banks: Bread and Games.

Being the inquisitive type, I Googled that phrase and found it was originally Bread and Circuses. A long dead Roman poet named Juvenal (c 200) originated it. In his work Satire X the Latin phrase panis et circenses (bread and circuses) is given as the only remaining cares of a Roman populace which has given up its birthright of political involvement. Here Juvenal displays his contempt for the declining heroism of his contemporary Romans. Here is the translated passage:

“… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses”
(Juvenal, Satire 10.77–81)

Now you may ask, “What the heck does this have to do with the Courier’s lack of press coverage?” To me, it may be symptomatic of a general trend in our society, one of seeking amusements over the more burdensome business of keeping tabs on our elected officials.

Thanks to our society’s insatiable appetite for sports (circuses), modern politicians need only concern themselves with handouts (bread) to gain popular support, instead of gaining it through sound policy. In this they are abetted by the Courier, our schools and us ourselves.

I’m not suggesting an end to high school sports, or sports in general. What I am suggesting is a de-emphasis on them by our news media. They should be paying more attention to local, state and national issues rather than devoting their efforts to reporting on circuses. It is up to We the People to let the media know we are not happy with their version of Bread and Circuses.

It surely does, I am just completely frustrated. Ronald Reagan was able to stand strong on his beliefs, and yet present it in a way that was not threatening. I am tired of compromising my beliefs while the libs and illegals and terrorists keep hacking away at the most wonderful and unique country. I guess we have to fight back, one step at a time. It has become terrifying some days.
